BIG Issues Updates – Property Rights, Elections & School Choice

There are more than a handful of BIG issues being addressed this legislative session.  We plan to offer updates on Property Taxes and the prison as soon as we can, but here are a few updates to get you thinking and acting on what is important to you!

Property Rights:

Amanda Radke with an update this morning… https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1Km1Fbmjhd/

On behalf of Rep. Karla Lems and Senator Mark Lapka, I am so proud and excited to share the the official introduction of the PEOPLE’S BILL – HB1052.
This bill will eliminate eminent domain use in South Dakota for carbon pipelines. It’s a clean, simple bill with a common sense solution, which would provide much relief to the people along the route who simply want to say, “No, thank you.”
This does not say no to projects or new agricultural market opportunities. As it is written, consenting landowners can still participate, while also empowering others to opt out.
What HB1052 does do that is so critically important is it secures the Constitutional certainty, and shores up our private property rights, that the people of South Dakota rightfully deserve.
The people have loudly spoken on this issue, and the legislature has the authority to act on the people’s mandate. Please, help me contact our legislators and urge them to swiftly pass HB1052 to provide much-needed relief to the citizens who so desperately need it.
Thank you to the legislators who have already signed on to co-sponsor HB1052. More names to be added to this list soon, I am certain!
Representatives Lems (prime), Aylward, Greenfield, Hughes, Ismay, Manhart, Mulally, Nolz, Schwans, and Sjaarda and Senators Lapka (prime), Hohn, Karr, and Perry

Elections:

SD Canvassing Group, election subject matter experts, with an update this morning and more to follow…

ALERT: Senators Hulse and Mehlhaff have teamed up with SOS Johnson with SB 48 and SB 73.
We DO NOT support these bills and hope all the new legislators that swore to uphold the constitution will also not support.
School Choice:
A battle is raging between two bills.
Jennifer Beving offers an update via Gov Watch South Dakota.
Jennifer Beving with AFP joins me to talk about the bill she helped develop for universal school choice, HB1020. I invited her to come talk with me about it after seeing a lot of different information going around about the bill as well as her and House Rep. Scott Odenbach, two of the biggest fighters for homeschoolers/school choice that I’ve seen! She took on numerous questions from me and others that I collected and we also look at the bill itself to see if it does in fact encourage more government overreach as well as other rumors about it.

Sponsor of HB1020, Rep Scott Odenbach offers thoughts:
SCHOOL CHOICE HELPS HOMESCHOOLERS TOO
Excellent editorial here from school choice evangelist Corey DeAngelis. He sent it to me this evening and is a big supporter of HB 1020 (an act to create education savings accounts). There’s probably nobody in the country who’s done more to promote smart school choice measures around the country. The record shows that the states with the most school choice also have the biggest coalition of people willing to stand together to protect parental rights.
Sponsor for HB1009, Rep Heather Baxter has not commented publicly that we have seen.
Lobbyist for American Action Fund, Anthony Mirzayants who is believed to have provided the bill to Baxter is leading the charge on this bill.
So far, the school choice bills are dominating the scene. Yesterday the bill was supposedly “withdrawn” by the sponsor, but Mirzayants is questioning that narrative, instead implying that House Speaker Jon Hansen withdrew the bill. The bill today looks active.
Your FAKE School Choice Bill is awful. You are completely dropping the ball, and I don’t know why.
YOU ARE INTRODUCING NEEDLESS REGULATION. This is dangerous.
Stop. Take a breather. Withdraw your bill.
Let the REAL School Choice champions handle this.
Jennifer Beving
Do not. Let. Us. Down.
